Another highlight was bicycling down from the rim of a volcano. We passed through villages and farms that brought the rural life of Bali to life for us. The farmers of Bali are very poor. They are not impervious to the downturn in tourism money as a result of the two bombings (the most recent was last October). They are all smiles though as we coasted by them. The children see Westerners and yell out "Hello, Hello! Hello!" I tried to teach them "wassup?" but most of them couldn't get it in the short time we saw them. One little girl repeated back to me "Hello little lady" perfectly. May laughs followed.
Kuta, the main tourist town was a zoo. A bezillion merchants hurting for a buck. Some hawking fake Rolexs and cheap messages.
Overall the people are very nice. Constantly smiling, patient and kind. We had plenty of solice at the hotel by the pool and enjoying Gado Gado at the local resteraunts. This place comes highly recommended by Alison and I and the O'Neals.
